The British School, Rio de Janeiro Education Conference is a three-day CPD event which has taken place every alternate year since 2015. The conference offers reflection and inspiration for over 350 Primary and Secondary TBS staff, as well as education professionals from other schools, cities and countries. After a successful online conference in 2021, we are extremely excited to be able to host the conference onsite once again in 2023.
Workshop content will be soundly backed by educational research and explore broad themes of Teaching & Learning, Curriculum Design and Leadership thus making this an exceptional professional development opportunity, regardless of the age range of your students.
The tagline for #TBSEDCON23 is Challenge, Connect, Cultivate. The conference aims to challenge teachers’ current thinking; to stimulate critical reflection about their own practice and explore how they can further challenge students in their classrooms. One of the major advantages of a return to an onsite conference is the ability to connect and network with other delegates and presenters; each day is planned with a view to maximising these opportunities for all. We have chosen the word cultivate to remind delegates that the conference is just the beginning. At TBS we will strive to build conference learning into our appraisal and internal INSET plans, such that key takeaways from the three days develops into real, positive impactful change in our classrooms.
The format of this year’s conference is different to years gone by.
Day 1 will begin with a keynote speech for all delegates and presenters, after which there will be four one-hour seminars spread throughout the day. When signing up, delegates will have several options to choose from for each of the seminar slots, based on different age ranges and areas of interest. The aim of the first day seminars is to give delegates an introduction into current thinking for a broad range of topics of their choice.
Day 2 will also begin with a keynote speech, after which delegates will go to a 4.5 hour workshop. When signing up, delegates will also choose their workshop based on age range and area of interest. The aim of the second day workshop is for attendees to do a deep dive into something which they hope to develop towards expertise; the focus of the workshop should then be a significant area of professional development for the months and years to follow.
Day 3 will be a reflection opportunity for delegates to reconvene in groups, and actively plan for next steps. What change are we going to aim for as a result of this conference? What will we do when we go back to our classrooms? How will we know we have been successful? How can we work together? Following this time, the day will end with a churrasco BBQ for all delegates – something we have been looking forward to since not being able to deliver it in our online conference in 2021!

Director, The British School, Rio de Janeiro
I am very excited that The British School, Rio de Janeiro, is hosting its 5th biennial Education Conference in April 2023 and proud that we as a School are able to create such an excellent opportunity for professional development and growth.
This year’s theme is “Challenge, Connect, Cultivate” and we look forward to welcoming our inspiring and creative keynote speakers as well as over 15 workshop leaders.
This year we can convene again after a year online, live at the spacious Barra campus close to some of Rio´s best beaches and mountains. There are many opportunities for varied and high quality professional development and, of course, a chance to head downtown and visit our very special and famous city, the Cidade Maravilhosa, or relax amongst the charms of Barra and the western zone.
We invite you to join us for what will certainly be a most instructive, thought provoking and stimulating experience, as we work with some of the world’s leading educationalists and participate in workshops with fellow colleagues from across the city and Latin American region. The new structure should help us not only to re-think and re-charge, but also to ensure that this is no passing Conference but one from which we can build sustained and lasting change in our schools
